นักวิชาการให้ความเห็นว่าเกาะกูดเป็นหินทราย ที่แยกตัวออกมาจากส่วนปลายของทิวเขาบรรทัด เมื่อประมาณ 65 ล้านปีก่อน มิอาจทราบได้ว่า "เกาะกูด” ที่ใช้เป็นนามเรียกขานกันในปัจจุบันนี้เรียกกันมาแต่เมื่อใด และก่อนหน้านี้ เกาะแห่งนี้มีชื่อว่าอะไร

เกาะกูด ปรากฏชื่ออยู่ในจารึกของจีนมาตั้งแต่สมัยราชวงศ์หมิง ดังปรากฏในหนังสือเจิ้งเหอหางไห่ถู่ เป็นหนังสือประเภทการเดินเรือของท่านเจิ้งเหอ ผู้เขียนเป็นคนในสมัยราชวงศ์หมิง ในแผนที่เบอร์ 13 กล่าวถึง เสี่ยวชื่อหลาน (Siaosuelan) บันทึกไว้ว่า "เสี่ยวชื่อหลานนี้อยู่ทางทิศเหนือของอ่าวไทย” หรือว่าหมายถึง Koh Tao Mo ที่อยู่ทางฝั่งใต้ของสัตหีบ บ้างว่าหมายถึงเกาะกูด ในขณะที่หนังสือกว่างจี้เป็นหนังสือบันทึกเรื่องราวชาวป่าเถื่อนสี่เผ่า กล่าวถึง เซียนจี๋ซาน (Sianjishan) บันทึกไว้ว่าเซียนจี๋ซานนี้หมายถึง เกาะกูด หรือเกาะหมากของไทยในปัจจุบันและ เจี่ยวกู่หวี่ (Jiaoguyu) บันทึกไว้ว่า เจี่ยวกู่หวี่นี้อยู่ทางภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือของอ่าวไทยในปัจจุบันอันหมายถึงเกาะกูดของไทย

ในสมัยพระนารายณ์มหาราช ชาวฮอลันดาได้จัดทำแผนที่ราชอาณาจักรไทยและประเทศที่อยู่โดยรอบ ปรากฏชื่อ เกาะที่อยู่บริเวณที่ตั้งของเกาะช้างว่า Macora และตำแหน่งบริเวณเกาะกูดว่า Pealan

เกาะกูดปรากฏชื่อเป็นครั้งแรกในเอกสารประวัติศาสตร์ในรัชสมัยของพระบาทสมเด็จพระพุทธยอดฟ้าจุฬาโลก มหาราชรัชกาลที่ 1 ปีพุทธศักราช 2325 ซึ่งเป็นปีเดียวกับที่ตั้งกรุงเทพมหานคร

องเชียงสือและครอบครัวได้หลบหนีกองทัพขององค์ไกเซินเจ้าเมืองกุยเยินที่ยกมาตีเมืองไซ่ง่อน เข้ามาพึ่งพระบรมโพธิสมภารที่กรุงเทพมหานครต่อมาในปีจุลศักราช 1148 (พ.ศ. 2329) องเชียงสือคิดจะกอบกู้บ้านเมืองคืน ครั้นจะกราบทูลลาออกไปก็เกรงพระราชอาญา ด้วยการศึกพม่ายังรบพุ่งติดพันกันอยู่จึงเขียนหนังสือกราบถวายบังคมแล้วหนีออกมาพร้อมด้วยองญวนอีกหลายคน ครั้นหนีมาแล้วจึงปรึกษากันว่าจะไปพักที่ใด องจองจึงว่าให้พักที่เกาะกูด เมืองตราด ในเวลานั้นบนเกาะกูดมีผู้คนอาศัยอยู่ไม่มากเท่าใดนัก องเชียงสือพำนักอยู่ที่เกาะกูดเป็นเวลา 1 ปี บริเวณที่องเชียงสือพำนักอยุู่ก็คือบริเวณน้ำตกคลองเจ้าในปัจจุบัน ด้วยเหตุนี้เองจึงเป็นที่มาของชื่อ "น้ำตกคลองเจ้า” น้ำตกลือชื่อของเกาะกูด

A historian said that Ko Kut is a Sand Stone lsland which had been disparated from the edge of Bantat range since 65 million years ago and up until now it still can’t tell why people called this island as "Ko Kut”.

Ko Kut was mentioned in historical record of China since Ming dynasty as written in Jerngherhanghaithoo, a traveling boat trip book of Jerng Her who was a writer in period of Ming Dynasty, in the map number 13 mentioned to Sieosuean that "Sieosuekan located in north of Thailand gulf” or possibly be Ko Tao Mo in the south of Sattahip, some believes that it is Ko Kut while Kwangjee book, a recorded of four tribes also mentioned about Sianjishan which mean Ko Kut or nowadays known as Ko Maak. And Jiaoguyu recorded that it’ s located in north east of Thailand gulf which is Ko Kut as well. During era of King Narai, the Hollander had written a map of Thai kingdom and surrounding countries, called Ko Chang as Macora and called a near by island as Pealan.

Ko Kut was firstly recorded in the history book of Ratanakosin during period of The King Rama 3 written by Chao Phrayadhipakornwong, a hand written version. From historical evident book of Ko Kut was found in period of H.M. King Bhudda Yord Fah Jullaloak, the King Rama 1 of B.B.2325 which is the same year of Bangkok establishment.

Ongsiangsue and family had escaped from Army of Ongkaisern, the City ruler of Gui Yern City which armed to attack Sai Ngon, he came to stay in Bangkok and late in 1188 (2329) he though of leavin to retrieve his city but when he’s too scared to say good bye to the King so he left a letter and went away with his fellows. He though of finding a place to stay for a while and he found Ko Kut in Trat province where there at that time had only few people lived there. He lived in Ko Kut for a year and where he used to live is nowadays called Klong Chao waterfall and that was a reason why the water fall named "Klong Chao Water Fall”
